I love using craft felt. It’s inexpensive and comes in a variety of colors. It’s also very versatile. I use it to make patches, small ornaments and toys, and other decor.
A few years ago, I saw this confetti garland on a website and instantly knew I could make it. It’s very similar to a garland Anthropologie made famous years ago, which I meant to replicate, but with so many projects on my to-do list, I never got around to it.
I am happy to say I finally created a DIY version of that fun garland, and it took less than 30 minutes from start to finish and for a fraction of the price seen online.
Materials
- 9×12-inch felt sheets in desired colors. For a 48-inch garland, I use eight sheets total (two in each color shown in the photo above). Here’s a great listing for a 10 pack of holiday colored high quality felt sheets.
- Rotary cutter or scissors
- Ruler
- DMC Pearl Cotton Ball Size 8 or similar
- Size 26 Tapestry Hand Needle or similar
I like using the 9-inch by 12-inch craft felt for this project. You can use scrap felt, but it is much easier to cut exactly what you need using this felt size. Also, using a rotary cutter and quilting ruler makes the cutting process faster and simpler. However, if you do not have one nor want to invest in these tools at the moment, a pair of scissors and a regular ruler will suffice.
How To Make Your Felt Garland
Watch the video tutorial below or continue further down the page for step-by-step photo instructions.
Step 1: Cut in half
Start by placing the 9×12-inch craft felt horizontally, with the 12-inch side aligned at the top. Cut the felt sheet exactly in half. This should leave you with two 6×9-inch pieces of felt.
Step 2: Cut strips
Rotate a 6×9-inch piece of felt so the 9-inch side is at the top. Align the ruler to mark or measure a one-inch strip. Then, make the cut. Repeat the process until you cut nine 1-inch strips. Repeat with the other 6×9-inch piece.
Step 3: Cut all the felt
Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you cut all the pieces of 9×12-inch felt sheets. Each sheet should give you 18 1×6-inch strips of felt.
Step 4: Tie the bows
Orientate one strip so the 6-inch side is aligned at the top. Tie a simple overhand knot. Repeat with the remaining strips of felt.
Step 5: Sew the garland
Unroll about a 5-foot section of pearl thread. Tie a loop at the one end.
Thread the other end of the string into a tapestry needle. Insert the needle into the middle knot of the bow and pull it through. Repeat with the remaining bows. Once you are done threading on all the bows, secure the last bow by tying a double knot with the tapestry thread and needle. Finally, tie another loop at the end with the remaining thread. Use the loops to hang your garland.
Ideas for Displaying Your Garland
The most obvious way to display your felt garland is to drape it on a fireplace mantle to add a warm, festive touch, especially during the holidays or special occasions. You can also wrap the garland around the staircase banisters for a whimsical effect. If you don’t have stairs or a fireplace mantle, no worries!
Try hanging your garland across window frames, which can frame your view beautifully, adding color and interest to your room. Welcome guests with a garland-adorned entryway! This placement is perfect for seasonal decorations like Halloween or Christmas.
Creative Customization Tips
Garlands aren’t just for Christmas!
Customize your garland for different holidays. Try red, white, and blue felt Fourth of July, or go with orange and black for a Halloween garland. For spring, pastel colors can create a soft, inviting look. Integrate elements like mini lights woven through the bows or natural greenery for a more lush appearance. A smaller-scale garland can be perfect for gift-wrapping accents or a charming addition to small spaces like office cubicles or car mirrors. Simply reduce the size of the felt strips and use a finer thread.
Creating this DIY felt confetti garland is not only easy but also a fun way to add a personalized touch to your décor. Inspired by the chic and whimsical style seen at trendy home stores, this project allows you to bring a piece of high-end style into your home at a fraction of the cost. I encourage you to play with colors, lengths, and styles to make a garland that perfectly matches your personal aesthetic or seasonal decor.
